One of the most successful groups of the 1970s, The Eagles scored six #1 albums and five number #1 singles. Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975), remains one of the top selling albums in U.S. history, having sold more than 29 million copies.

Originally comprised of Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, The Eagles formed in 1971 and continue to perform–their last album, Long Road out of Eden, was released in 2007. The band has earned six Grammy Awards, has been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was listed as one of Rolling Stone‘s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.”

Live Concert Film Capture Definitive, 26-Song Performance Recorded at the Fabulous Forum in September 2018 Featuring First Eagles’ Recordings with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey. LIVE FROM THE FORUM MMXVIII, a Scheme Engine production directed by Nick Wickham, was filmed on 14 4K cameras. The set captures definitive live performances of the band’s most iconic hits (“Hotel California,” “Take It Easy,” “Life In The Fast Lane,” “Desperado”) and beloved album tracks (“Ol’ 55, “Those Shoes”), along with some of the individual members’ biggest solo smashes (Henley’s “Boys Of Summer,” Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way,” and Gill’s “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away”).

Eagles: Live from the Forum MMXVIII is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Rhino Entertainment with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.34:1. While detail levels are generally good throughout this presentation, this is one of the darkest live concerts I’ve seen recently, just from a standpoint of stage lighting. The band is frequently bathed in deep blues which tend to deflate fine detail considerably, and a couple of moments that are lit in deep red tones come very close to posterizing. Otherwise, though, there is a good accounting of the players and audience, with above average fine detail levels in close-ups.

Eagles: Live from the Forum MMXVIII features DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 tracks, though like a lot of concert video releases on Blu-ray, the disc has been authored to default to the stereo track. While both tracks offer sterling fidelity, the surround track significantly opens things up from the get go, even with regard to the brief shot of a jet flying overhead during some establishing shots. The soundstage is nicely wide but still focused on the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, and the vocals are to my ears mixed perfectly.

The Eagles’ Hotel California was a critical and commercial phenomenon when it was released in December 1976. The album topped the Billboard charts for eight weeks in the U.S., won two GRAMMY® Awards, sold more than 32 million copies around the world, and featured two Billboard #1 hit singles. 40 years later, it still ranks as one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The set also marks the debut of ten live tracks that were recorded during the band’s three-night stand at the Los Angeles Forum in October 1976. The concert recordings — which were recorded about a month before the album came out — feature one of the first ever live performances of “Hotel California” and “New Kid In Town” along with other Eagles classics including  “Already Gone,” “Take It To the Limit,” and “Witchy Woman.”
The Eagles made their triumphant return to the stage this summer at the Classic East/West festivals, earning raves from critics and fans alike. More live dates are planned for this fall, with the band being joined on stage once again by country superstar Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of Eagles founder, Glenn Frey.

Two CD set, 33 tracks. With a career spanning over four decades The Eagles are among the most successful Rock ‘N’ Roll acts of all time. The original Eagles compilation, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, remains one of the best-selling records of all time and this updated two CD collection contains all the same hallmarks that made it so successful, with some welcome surprises. The staple recordings remain, with ‘Hotel California’ the most immediately recognizable, as well as hits like ‘Lyin’ Eyes’ and ‘New Kid in Town’. Also included is their single ‘Hole in the World’, written as a response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Like many of The Eagles’ songs, the difficult and confrontational subject matter is softened by their trademark vocal harmonies. (more…)

Essentially the same release, albeit with a slightly rearranged track list, as The Complete Greatest Hits, The Very Best of the Eagles is a two-disc crash course in the career of one of rock music’s most iconic acts. With classic tracks like “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Take It Easy,” and “Hotel California,” the compilation touches on some of the band’s most ubiquitous tracks while still taking the time to dive deeper into their discography with its 33-track playlist. While it’s hard not to be at least vaguely familiar with a band as big as the Eagles, this collection will act as a guide for those looking to dig a little deeper into the band’s celebrated back catalog.

If Don Henley was the sole member of the Eagles underrepresented on their debut album, Eagles, with only two lead vocals and one co-songwriting credit, he made up for it on their follow-up, the “concept” album Desperado. The concept had to do with Old West outlaws, but it had no specific narrative. On Eagles, the group had already begun to marry itself to a Southwest sound and lyrical references, from the Indian-style introduction of “Witchy Woman” to the Winslow, AZ, address in “Take It Easy.” All of this became more overt on Desperado, and it may be that Henley, who hailed from Northeast Texas, had the greatest affinity for the subject matter. In any case, he had co-writing credits on eight of the 11 selections and sang such key tracks as “Doolin-Dalton” and the title song. What would become recognizable as Henley’s lyrical touch was apparent on those songs, which bore a serious, world-weary tone. Henley had begun co-writing with Glenn Frey, and they contributed the album’s strongest material, which included the first single, “Tequila Sunrise,” and “Desperado” (strangely never released as a single). But where Eagles seemed deliberately to balance the band’s many musical styles and the talents of the band’s members, Desperado, despite its overarching theme, often seemed a collection of disparate tracks – “Out of Control” was a raucous rocker, while “Desperado” was a painfully slow ballad backed by strings – with other bandmembers’ contributions tacked on rather than integrated. Randy Meisner was down to two co-writing credits and one lead vocal (“Certain Kind of Fool”), while Bernie Leadon’s two songs, “Twenty-One” and “Bitter Creek,” seemed to come from a different record entirely. The result was an album that was simultaneously more ambitious and serious-minded than its predecessor and also slighter and less consistent.

Originally released in June 1972, the Eagles’ self-titled debut played a significant role in changing the face of mainstream music while setting up a dominant run that’s continued for nearly five decades. Produced by Glyn Johns, and home to three massive hits, Eagles established a cleverly restrained, Los Angeles-bred style that would sweep the country and position the group as superstars. Mastered from the original analog master tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered-edition hybrid SACD pays tribute to the record’s merit and enhances the intimate program for generations to come. Playing with reference sonics that elevate an effort forever prized by audiophiles, this spectacular version provides a clear, clean, transparent, balanced, and intimate view of an album that permanently made California-style rock a style of its own.

“Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975” is the first compilation album by the Eagles, originally released in 1976. The album contains a selection of songs from the Eagles’ first four albums released in the period from the Eagles’ formation in 1971 up to 1975. It was the best-selling album of the 20th century in the United States, and it stayed the best-selling album in the U.S. for some years until it was surpassed by Michael Jackson’s Thriller after the artist’s death in 2009. It is the second highest-certified album by the Recording Industry Association of America at 29× Platinum, behind Thriller. In 2017, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or artistically significant”. (more…)
