The role of Rodolfo from Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème launched Luciano Pavarotti’s career in 1961 when he made his professional debut in a small regional production in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He would revisit the role several times over his career, including this 1972 album considered to be one of the finest versions of La Bohème ever recorded. Equally impressive here is Pavarotti’s childhood friend Mirella Freni as Mimi. Conductor Herbert von Karajan proves himself a masterful, sensitive interpreter of Puccini as he leads the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Decca recorded Turandot with by no means obvious casting Joan Sutherland as the icy Princess and Zubin Mehta on the podium. It became the Turandot of modern times and, of course, gave us the Nessun dorma that became Pavarotti s signature aria during the World Cup 1990 festivities. With Montserrat Caballé as a heart-melting Liù, this is a recording that has not been equalled in the decades since.
The glory years of the 1980s and 90s when Pavarotti had become a true superstar lay ahead, but this recording contains some infinitely treasurable singing Pavarotti was a celebrity who d earned his fame, and learned his craft slowly and completely. He was indeed grandissimo in every way.

Even Dame Joan Sutherland has rarely if ever made an opera recording so totally enjoyable and involving as this. With the same cast (including chorus and orchestra) as at Convent Garden, it was recorded in 1966 immediately after a series of live performances in the Royal Opera House, and both the comedy and the pathos come over with an intensity born of communication with live audiences. That impression is now the more vivid on this superb transfer, for with spoken dialogue used in this original French version of the opera the absence of background noise is a special benefit, and the production vividly captures the developments in the story. La favorite (‘The Favorite’, sometimes referred to by its Italian title: ‘La favorita’) is a grand opera in four acts by Gaetano Donizetti to a French-language libretto by Alphonse Royer and Gustave Vaëz, based on the play Le comte de Comminges by Baculard d’Arnaud. It premiered on 2 December 1840 at the Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique in Paris, France.

Originally, Donizetti had been composing an opera by the name of Le Duc d’Albe as his second work for the Opera in Paris. However, the director, Léon Pillet, objected to an opera without a prominent role for his mistress, mezzo-soprano Rosine Stoltz. Donizetti therefore abandoned Le Duc d’Albe and borrowed heavily from L’ange de Nisida, an unrealized project from 1839, to create La favorite. It was revived in Padua under the title of Leonora di Guzman in 1842, and at La Scala as Elda in 1843. Though Donizetti himself was not involved in these productions, the opera is now more commonly given in Italian rather than French. (more…)

“Bonynge leads a team … which not only conveys jollity but which sings and plays as though full opera house applause is to be expected a the end of each number … The ECO playing … has a refinement and stylishness which makes all the difference … Pavarotti has a Gigli -like quality in characterisation and this suits him ideally for the role of the simple, devoted Nemorino … you should readily be won over by the sheer exuberance, vocal as well as dramatic, that Sutherland brings to the role. It is a joy to the ear to have well- loved music treated to extra vocal splendours at both ends of the soprano register.” –Gramophone (more…)

Luciano Pavarotti has long avoided doing the kind of solo crossover release often proffered by his Three Tenors comrades Plácido Domingo and José Carreras; indeed, in his liner introduction he claims that he was initially “very skeptical” of this project. He came around, though, and the result marks his first solo album of any kind in years. Catty opera cognoscenti hoping for an embarrassment may be gratified by a few booklet photos (keep that shirt on, Luciano!), but otherwise they’re out of luck. The music is actual modern Italian pop rather than the sort of international sentimental style that seems to have been dreamed up in a marketing department, not a music studio. The songs included are mostly originals (several by producer Michele Centonze), and though they vary in quality they don’t rely on the kind of flabby familiarity that can doom a crossover project artistically. (An adaptation of Nino Rota’s old Love Theme From Romeo and Juliet will please Three Tenors fans.) The style is vocally oriented and suits Pavarotti well; electronic accompaniments are quiet and rarely compete with his voice. The singer even has fun with the quasi-rock & roll title track and with a portrait of the aging Caruso, featuring Jeff Beck on guitar. His age is clearly audible, but he’s still got it. Some have suggested that Ti adoro represents an attempt on the part of Pavarotti’s label Decca to compete with the current crop of teen-classical crossover divas. If so, the attempt is misconceived and proves little – except that he could teach them a thing or three. On its own terms, however, it works just fine. You might even wish he’d done it ten years ago, but even so you won’t find another 68-year-old who can sing with this kind of verve. (more…)

For sheer vocal splendor you can’t go wrong with the 1971 Decca recording featuring the virile baritone Sherrill Milnes as Rigoletto, Luciano Pavarotti in radiant voice as a stylish but slightly scene-stealing Duke, and Joan Sutherland as a Gilda who is a little too vocally resplendent to come across as innocent, but is certainly a treat to hear.
