In 1964, when this concert at New York City’s legendary Copacabana night club was recorded, Sam Cooke was at the top of his game, having charted numerous times with his unique blend of pop and soul. The success doesn’t seem to have gone to his head, though: he sounds relaxed and conversational throughout this intimate performance.

Accompanied by a band that includes Bobby Womack on guitar, Cooke brings his R&B tendencies further to the fore than on his immaculately produced studio work. He moves deftly through his own hits, like ‘You Send Me’ and ‘Twistin’ The Night Away,’ but it’s on the folk songs ‘If I Had A Hammer’ and ‘Blowin’ In The Wind’ that he really stretches out, proving himself a gifted interpreter unbound by stylistic constrictions.

„Sam Cooke At The Copa“ is an essential part of the Cooke canon.

For the first time on HIGHRESAUDIO, Keep Movin’ On, a 23-song collection that encompasses some of Sam Cooke’s best loved and most incisive songs and represents the artist both at the very pinnacle and, tragically, at the very end of his ground breaking career. The songs that comprise Keep Movin’ On were, for the most part, written and produced by Sam Cooke following his successful fight for complete creative and economic control over his recordings and repertoire. The notion of artistic self-determination was an unheard-of concept for virtually any recording artist, let alone a young rhythm and blues singer in the early 1960s.

“The Best Of Sam Cooke” album was the beacon that kept Cooke’s most popular songs in the public eye. Between 1957 and his death seven years later, Cooke recorded an average of one Top Ten single every four months! For a couple of generations this was the first – and often only – Sam Cooke album they owned. Although there are more ambitious collections that show Cooke’s remarkable range and diversity, this is still the best starting place. These are Sam Cooke’s biggest commercial hits. This is the message in a bottle that brought his gifts to millions of people.

Some smoking uptempo tunes, wailing ballads, and even interesting pop and novelty material. Sam Cooke was at his commercial peak in the early ’60s, and if you ever find this anywhere, grab it quickly. It’s well worth having. Someday, a major label will wise up and either put all Cooke’s Keen, RCA, and Sar material back in print or put out a huge boxed set package. – Ron Wynn

This album, which was sadly to be Sam Cooke’s last, found him exercising a hard-won creative freedom to fine effect. You can hear it most clearly in the moving, socially relevant ballad ‘A Change Is Gonna Come.’ But it doesn’t stop there. Cooke dips into the well of country music for a version of the classic ‘Tennessee Waltz’ that is startling in its transformative ability, as he accomplishes a feat that no one but Ray Charles himself was capable of at the time–turning country seamlessly into soul.
